Mount Hagen Coffee Review 2020: Is Organic Coffee Good for You?

September 23, 2019 by Curtis Silver

Instant coffee is unquestionably the best way to have a cup of joe every time you want it.

Even if you are in a remote location, all you need is hot water, a cup, a stirrer, and presto! A sizzling hot java will give you the necessary boost you need in the morning.

But did you know that instant coffees are not created equal? Some brands are caffeinated and some are decafs.

There are also organic ones while some are not.

Some brands use coffee beans grown using pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals. Some brands don’t use chemicals to grow and harvest coffee beans.

Just like the Mount Hagen coffees. This brand is chemical-free (both in growing coffee plants and in brewing the coffee) so it is considered organic.

There are cheap ones while there are more expensive coffees. The difference lies in the roast, aroma, body, flavor, acidity, and other distinctive characteristics a coffee brand has.

In this Mount Hagen Coffee review, you will be able to know and understand more about this brand.

What is Mount Hagen Instant Coffee?

Mount Hagen organic instant coffee is the world’s first certified organic coffee drink (1). The Mount Hagen organic freeze-dried instant coffee is one of the world’s favorite.

When we say organic, it means that there are no artificial chemicals used in producing the coffee beans. These chemicals include certain additives or any other pesticides or herbicides.

And Mount Hagen doesn’t use them.

Furthermore, Mount Hagen coffee beans (100% Arabica) are ethically-sourced from all around the world which are grown in higher elevations and shaded areas.

But contrary to popular beliefs, certified organic coffees can be produced using organic-certified fertilizers.

These fertilizers may include coffee pulp, chicken manure, bokashi, and general compost (organic matter decomposed through a process called composting).

But being organic does not end with farming and harvesting the coffee beans. For coffees to be certified as 100% organic, the cherries should be roasted in equipment solely dedicated to roasting (2).

Moreover, this equipment should be thoroughly cleaned between roasts. Mount Hagen does just that!

To make you more comfortable drinking Mount Hagen coffee, the company wants you to know that they care about the environment and the farmers who cultivate coffee beans for them.

As Mount Hagen says, “Organic or Demeter coffee does not grow by itself” (3).

Mount Hagen has more to say about their coffee.

“Yet this is precisely our claim. What good is an opulent espresso to anyone if forests are destroyed and the soil is contaminated with aggressive chemicals just to produce it? And does the finest single-origin Arabica taste good to you if the coffee farmers can’t even send their children to school with the money they make from it?”

“Not to us. That’s why we work together with Fairtrade and pay the prices set by the organization. That’s why all of our coffees are organic, grown in small cultivations under shade trees.

This, in turn, is a reason why it tastes so outrageously delicious.”

History of Mount Hagen Coffee

Mount Hagen coffees are certified by the US Department of Agriculture as 100% organic and meet the standard set by IMO-EcoCert GmbH Germany.

In the early 1980s, when organic instant coffee was non-heard of, a group of German businessmen saw potential in buying organic coffee in Papua New Guinea.

The coffee plantation was near Mount Hagen, one of Papua New Guinea’s beloved mountains (the brand is named after the mountain).

In 1986, the first one and a half container of the world’s first biodynamic (bio-Dyn) coffee was shipped to Germany from the Oceania country.

After a few years, the company imported more organic coffee beans from the Dominican Republic, Peru, Mexico, Honduras, and later from Africa.

The company did return to Papua New Guinea after the conflict in the country subsided. Mount Hagen is currently producing 50 to 60 containers a year of the “most wonderful organic fairtrade Arabica coffees in Papua New Guinea”.

What is Fair Trade in Mount Hagen coffees?

According to the Mount Hagen website (4), Fair Trade is defined as “A strategy for fighting poverty: Farmers in Africa, Latin America, and Asia can effectively improve their living and working conditions through fair trade standards – guaranteed minimum prices significantly higher than the world market level plus fixed premium payments and compliance with social and environmental criteria.

They get a stable income, access to the world market and long-term and direct trade relations”.

How is Mount Hagen brewed?

This instant coffee is a German-processed product which uses freeze-drying technology in brewing. In a freeze-drying technique, the coffee is grind and brews, freeze-dry it, and then crush it into tiny pieces.

In this process, the liquid coffee is subjected to ultra-low temperatures to freeze the mix starting at 20F (-6.70C). The resulting crystals are further cooled to about -40F (-40C).

The process will yield icy coffee crystals which are then ground and dried into fine particles. At this time, water is evaporated.

The processes don’t use chemicals or solvents, unlike non-organic instant coffees. Although these synthetic chemicals and solvents were proven non-health risks to coffee drinkers, Mount Hagen thinks that going organic is an environment-friendly option.

Mount Hagen various products

Mount Hagen organic instant coffee comes in 7 variants which are all available on Amazon.com. You can also buy Mount Hagen on Whole Foods Market.com.

#1 Mount Hagen Organic Decaffeinated Instant Coffee in a Jar

This product comes in a jar containing 3.53 Oz (100 grams) of purely organic coffee. The coffee can be added with milk and sweetener.

To make a decaffeinated coffee, Mount Hagen uses water and carbon dioxide (also known as the Carbon Dioxide {CO2} process) to extract the caffeine. In this operation, only pure water is used.

However, only 97% of the total caffeine in the coffee beans is extracted so you still have about 3% of caffeine left in this brew.

The remaining caffeine is a very small amount perfect for those who want their coffee decaf but still packed with aroma and full-bodied taste.

The Mount Hagen Decaf Fairtrade coffee is ideal for students, campers, travelers, small households, and other coffee purists who want top-of-the-line organic coffee in an instant.
